Battlefield Detectives: The Mexican-American War, Palo Alto, Friday, December 10th at 8 PM/7c

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Special Presentation: Ben Franklin Sunday, December 5th at 9 PM/8c Saturday, December 11th at 8 PM/7c Benjamin Franklin was an American Renaissance man. Franklin was the architect of the Revolutionary era and beyond and many would argue was the most visionary of our Founding Fathers. Inventor, politician, writer, businessman, scientist, diplomat … these are the things we automatically think about when we remember Franklin. That, of course, is the mythic, legendary Ben Franklin - but it is not the only Ben Franklin. This special presentation will introduce students to the more human side of the man who graces the hundred dollar bill, revealing the contradictions which made up the life of this brilliant writer and statesman.
This two hour special presentation features the commentary of some of the foremost experts on Franklin’s life and legacy. Together with archival images and narrative quotations from his writings and letters, this compelling program will engage students with its vivid portrayal of Franklin’s early life, his travels, and his critical contribution to the creation of the republic. Ben Franklin will immerse students in the world of this remarkable man, giving them new insights into his political and intellectual preoccupations, his many inventions, and his fascinating personal life. As an early abolitionist, Ben Franklin’s legacy spanned the 19th century and beyond. Through this exceptional look at Franklin’s life, students will be able to grasp the profound ways this one individual helped build our nation, and the ways his footprints extend throughout our contemporary world.
Curriculum Links: Ben Franklin would be useful for classes on American History, American Culture, Government, and Civics. Due to some sophisticated and mature content involving Franklin’s personal life, we recommend it for 8th grade and above. We suggest that teachers view this program before recommending it or screening it for students. It fulfills the following standards as outlined by the National Council for History Education: Civilization, Cultural Diffusion and Innovation, and Patterns of Social and Political Interaction.
Modern Marvels: Space Shuttle Wednesday, December 8th at 4PM/3c For generations, scientists and science-fiction writers alike dreamed of a reusable “space plane.” These durable maneuverable ships would make trips to the heavens commonplace and advance the reach of humankind. Now, Modern Marvels takes a look at how a team from NASA made that dream real by developing the most extraordinary machine in history-- the revolutionary Space Shuttle. Modern Marvels: Space Shuttle reveals the complex series of tests, concepts, and design strategies NASA scientists developed to accomplish this amazing task. The program examines the process leading up to the Shuttle’s first flight and introduces students to the fundamental laws of physics and gravity this endeavor employed. It provides an excellent real-life example of how human ingenuity and a grasp of science have expanded the scope of our knowledge of the universe and have broadened (literally) our view of the world.
Curriculum Links: Modern Marvels: Space Shuttle would be useful for classes on Science, Technology, American History and American Culture. It is appropriate for middle school and high school students. It fulfills the following standards outlined by the National Council for History Education: Civilization, Cultural Diffusion and Innovation, and Human Interaction with the Environment.
Battlefield Detectives: The Mexican-American War, Palo Alto Friday, December 10th at 8 PM/7c On May 8th 1846, the armies of Mexico and the United States met in battle at a place called Palo Alto, near Brownsville, deep in Southern Texas. The two countries had been anticipating war since the annexation of Texas in 1845 as they struggled for control over this expansive territory. The rough outline of this event is one historians have recorded, yet the details of what transpired at Palo Alto has remained mysterious. Previously, some sources indicate that the battle ended in a draw while others suggest a full retreat by the Mexican army. This fascinating episode in the Battlefield Detectives series shows how battlefield archeology and cutting edge research techniques have helped historians discover new details about what actually occurred in Palo Alto. Students will be intrigued by the dynamic methods historians and forensic scientists use in order to reassess these events of over 150 years ago. This program offers a compelling view of how history and science merge—and how their partnership has told us more about the past than we ever expected to know.
Curriculum Links: Battlefield Detectives: The Mexican-American War, Palo Alto would be useful for classes on Science, Technology, American History and American Culture. It is appropriate for middle school and high school students. It fulfills the following standards as outlined by the National Council for History Education: Civilization, Cultural Diffusion and Innovation, Patterns of Social and Political Interaction, Conflict and Cooperation and Human Interaction with the Environment.
Discussion Questions: 1. What did historians know about the battle before they used these new techniques? What kinds of sources did they use?
2. Which theory of how the battle ended do you find most believable?
Flag Day Parade Pictures
June 30, 2004
I remind everyone of Lee Greenwood's inspiring lyric to "God Bless the USA"
"I thank my lucky stars to be living here today
for the flag still stands for Freedom and they can't take that away
So I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm Free
And I won't forget the men who died who gave that right to me
And I gladly stand up next to you and defend her till today
For there ain't no doubt I love this land
GOD BLESS THE USA
Influenza, commonly known as the "flu" is a highly contagious disease. Its symptoms include fever, chills, headache, sore throat, runny nose and body aches. While most people fully recover from the flu in two to seven days, older adults are particularly vulnerable to dangerous complications, such as pneumonia, that may develop after infection with the flu. Influenza vaccine is composed of killed influenza virus, so those who receive the immunization cannot get influenza from the vaccine. The 2003-2004 vaccine which will be administered contains A/New Caledonia, A/Panama, B/Hong Kong like antigens. As recommended by the Public Health Service. Persons who were immunized last year are NOT protected against this year's type.
