Included here is GENERAL INFORMATION on the Basic STAR, Enhanced STAR and Senior Citizens Exemptions.  Please call or visit the Assessor's Office for more complete information Remember, all new and renewal applications must be in the Assessor's Office by March 1st.

The Basic STAR, Enhanced STAR and Senior Citizens Exemptions may provide tax relief for qualified property owners on their Primary Residence.

 


NEW STAR Applicants

In 2005, the STAR Program has changed to a STAR Credit Program and NOT a property tax exemption for NEW applicants.   To receive the STAR credit you must register with New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.   If you quality for the program you will receive a CHECK in the mail from NYS. You are considered a new applicant if you purchased your home after March 1, 2015 OR if you did not apply for the STAR exemption by March 1 2015.  For more information, scroll down to "Documents" and review:

Basic STAR

  • No age
  • The combined income of all owners and their spouses who reside on the parcel must be $500,000 or less 
  • Home must be the primary residence of the applying owner(s)

 

 

Enhanced STAR

  • Homeowners must be at least 65 years of age by December 31st of the year of application.  In the case of a husband and wife or siblings, only one needs to be 65
  • Income of all owners, and any owners' spouses residing on the premises, must meet the income requirements set by New York State each year
  • Must be renewed each year

Include a NYS Driver's license for each of the applicants and a copy of the filed Federal or State Income Tax Return with your completed application.  See the STAR application to determine which income tax year is required.

 

Senior Citizens Exemption 

  • Exemption for senior citizens with limited incomes
  • Homeowners must be at least 65 years of age by March 1st of the year of application.  In the case of a husband and wife or siblings, only one needs to be 65
  • Income of all owners, and any owners' spouses residing on the premises, must meet the income requirements set by the School, County and/or Town each year
  • Must have title to the property for 12 consecutive months before application unless the applicant(s) was granted a senior exemption on a previous residence
  • Must be renewed each year

Include a NYS Driver's license for each of the applicants.  Also, a copy of the filed Federal or State Income Tax Return from the previous "income tax year" prior to the date of application along with your completed application form.

 

What if my property is in a Trust?  What if I have a Life Estate?
